Leadership & Diversity by Ms. Laura Liswood, Goldman Sachs

Ms. Laura Liswood is a Senior Advisor of the Global Leadership and Diversity, Goldman Sachs. According to her thought-provoking speech, a great leader is a person who has a "cool head & hot heart". She also explained the difference of board decisions between men and women. In the board meeting, men tend to focus on short term income while women tend to focus on long term income. In addition, men aim to get benefit for shareholders while women aim to get benefit for stakeholders. You can see diversity here.

There is another interesting research result, which shows the difference of reactions between men and women. Men tend to think that the reason of success is "themselves" if a thing went well in the business. On the other hand, women tend to think that the reason of success was her team members, environment, and/or luck if a thing went well. If a thing went wrong, men tend to think the reason because of the external factors like someone else, but not because of themselves. However, women tend to think the reason was "themselves" if a thing didn’t go well.

This is interesting for me. You might see those differences in work place. This tells you that cognitive activities are different between men and women in the business situations. Actually, I don’t think that this cognitive difference applies to everyone and every business situations. I think it’s always up to you. It may not be a difference between men and women, perhaps.

In conclusion, what I learnt from Laura’s speech was that we live in a world of diversity and diversity can be a force of innovation. It’s important for us to understand diversity and the diversity makes our life happier when we act smart way in the workplace.
